Sad update: As many people probably already know, the state illegally demolished this historic house in the early hours of March 2017.  While the state launched an investigation, nothing has yet been done as of July 2017.

One of my father-son hobbies with The Pres is exploring graveyards.  I’ve always been fascinated by them, and I enjoy walking through a graveyard thinking about all of the things that the people buried there have accomplished, and The Pres seems to enjoy exploring them as well.  So back in the Fall when I was being crushed under a pile of work (stupid teaching middle school now), I took a few hours out to go explore New St Marys Cemetery in Bellmawr, NJ.

My reason behind visiting was the cemetery, but also the troubled Hugg-Harrison House that is located with the cemetery, which I wrote about back in October.  While the house is far from saved, things are looking more hopeful as the Save the Historic Hugg Harrison House Committee continues to fight to move the house to a new location in Bellmawr and turn it into a museum.  If you want to learn more about the house and the history behind it, I can’t recommend reading The Hugg/Harrison/Glover House (New Saint Mary’s Cemetery), Borough of Bellmawr, Camden County, New Jersey by local historian Jerseyman.  If you want to stay in the loop on how to help fight to save the house, then friend the Save the Histortic Hugg-Harrison House facebook page.

Anyway, our walk back in October was an excuse to get an up close look at the house from not-the-highway, which was followed by a lovely stroll through the graveyard to see some of the beautiful gravestones that are located there.
